Position: Dean of Mathematics, Science and Wellness
We are seeking a Dean of Mathematics, Science and Wellness at an independent
Middle and High School New York, Ross School
(http://www.ross.org/). Our curriculum is taught around a core of
cultural history and we have found that candidates who bring an understanding of
the history and philosophy of science and/or math often best meet the needs of
and enjoy the work. The candidate should be interested in teaching high school,
bridging pre-collegiate and tertiary education through work with Ross Institute
(http://www.rossinstitute.org) and developing faculty
through content and pedagogy in the domains served under the deanship.
Requirements:
The Dean works closely with Leadership Council to implement school policy;
exercise supervisory responsibilities over assigned faculty; evaluate faculty
through classroom visitations and other means; implement the ISM faculty
development program; assist in the assignment of courses and class times for
academic area faculty; hire prospective faculty; work closely with IT, Library,
and Child Study Team Directors to further school and academic area goals and to
support student needs; serve jointly as Senior Project Coordinator with the
other Deans.
The Dean works with Leadership Council and area domain chairs to ensure
standards and exit outcomes are implemented and met within the curriculum;
provide creative and responsible leadership for Mathematics, Science and
Wellness academic area and support area domain chairs' work on curriculum
development (scope and sequence grades 5-12), integration, instruction and
documentation; oversee the design and implementation of an integrated curriculum
in his/her domain (science); teach within his/her academic area(s); direct the
preparation of departmental exams (if applicable to the domain) in science and
support this work in other area domains; maintain domain files, equipment,
materials, and spaces for the science domain; monitor records of student
progress and/or problems in achieving learning outcomes within his/her domain
(science) and support this function in other area domains; communicate regularly
with parents and meet with them when appropriate; coordinate regular domain
meetings (science) and academic area meetings with domain chairs in his/her
academic area and post minutes of these meetings; assist domain faculty in
arranging coverage/substitute when faculty are absent in science and support
this function in other area domains; participate in grade level meetings when
appropriate; keep current with educational research, literature, technology and
discipline innovations relevant to the academic area's overall goals and Ross
School mission.
The Dean works closely with the academic area domain chairs and supports their
work to create departmental goals and objectives that are in line with the Ross
School mission statement; present and monitor an annual domain budget; organize
and produce special student performances (if applicable to domain) and domain
activities/special events; contribute to and coordinate domain contributions to
the Ross School World Wide Web Page or other similar site; support domain
faculty in shaping their professional growth.
As a domain teacher, the Dean provides students with regularly scheduled
assignments, as well as formal assessments; designs lessons and projects
reflecting the theory of multiple intelligences; and composes written
evaluations of student performance throughout the year.
Qualifications:
• Master's Degree in related discipline or higher
• Minimum 3 yrs successful K-12 teaching experience, supervisory experience preferred
• Strong written & oral communication skills
• Self-motivated- ability to work in a strong team setting
