ISHPSSB 2003-2005 Paper Acceptance Guidelines
The following guidelines for paper acceptance have been provisionally approved by the Council and will hold for the 2005 meeting in Guelph:
ISHPSSB would like to encourage sessions that:
- combine more than one disciplinary perspective;
- include participants from more than one institution and/or nation;
- promote the interaction of junior and senior scholars, including students.
Other guidelines:
- The program officer, in consultation with the program committee, and consistent with site constraints, will organize a rich, diverse, and high quality program. While it is the intention of the Society to be as inclusive as possible, the program officer has the discretion to reject papers or sessions that are truly inappropriate for these meetings or that do not meet basic standards of communication. The program committee is available to assist the program officer in judging borderline cases.
- No one may present in more than one session. An exception is made for those who organize another session, comment in another session, or give a short plenary address. Individuals may serve more than one function in a given session, e.g. chair and presenter.
- Each regular session must have a minimum of three presenters.
- Topics that extend over two sessions are acceptable, but they cannot extend over more than two sessions.
- All accepted participants must pre-register for the conference in order to be included in the program.
Listserv Moderator's Report 2001-2005:
In August 2001, the Listserv Moderator conducted a survey of the subscribers to the listserv. The results of the survey appeared in the Fall 2001 newsletter (see ISHPSSB archives). Based on the results of the survey and the recommendations of the President and the President-Elect, it was decided that there should be two types of messages sent to the list: official ISHPSSB announcements that are labelled as such and appear in full in the email message, and collations of announcements from members. It was further decided that collations of announcements from members would include: position announcements, postdoctoral announcementsm, grant and funding opportunities, other conference announcements and calls for papers, and brief queries from members on research topics. Only short summaries would be included in the email messages, with links to the complete announcement. The list of procedures below reflect these decisions.
Initially, the complete descriptions were located on a bulletin board provided by vt.edu. However, the bulletin board interface was awkward and somewhat confusing for members (in opinion of the Listserv Moderator), and so when the Listserv Moderator also became the Webmaster, the complete descriptions became regular webpages on the ISHPSSB website.
There has been discussion of having a listserv or a bulletin board for general discussion; this has not yet occurred and it may be an issue that the Society wants to take up at a future date.

Since March 2003, approximately 300 individuals have joined or fully renewed their memberships.
A membership drive this fall, prior to mailing of the Fall Newsletter, may help with renewals of the 234 delinquent members and may encourage some of the registered nonmembers to join. This could increase our membership by nearly 200 additional members. It will also help us cull our database more accurately and reduce mailing costs to delinquent members.
*Delinquent members continued to receive the ISHPSSB Newsletter (whether they wanted it or not) because systematic membership drives were not conducted until October 2001. After that time, delinquent members were deleted from the database one year after their status switched to delinquent.

About 400 active members: 300 full paying, 100 grad student; 300 members are delinquent in payments
1995 Membership report
Membership at the time of the 1995 meeting stood at 604, a 27% increase over two years previously. 476 were regular members; 128 students members.
